Golf Course update:
Storm Ciaran: Golf course update 8th December 2023
The sports centre was hit by Storm Ciaran on the 1st November resulting in damage to all areas, and it is well documented that the tornado that accompanied the storm inflicted further damage to the golf course and padel courts. The work to repair the golf course, undertaken by Chris, his team and outside contractors has been tremendous, and when you consider the conditions that they were working in, it is a fantastic achievement to see how well the course has progressed and it is edging closer to being open.
At this point I must emphasise that the main reason that the golf course is currently closed is NOT the damage caused by the storm, but by a waterlogged golf course, making the playing of golf impossible. Records show that November was the second wettest on record and this is proven by the soil reaching ‘field capacity’ in mid-November!! In an attempt to drain the course, we have been pumping out the ponds so that the excess fairway water could drain into them, unfortunately this has been compounded by the fact that it has not stopped raining!!
On Monday 4thDecember, as mentioned in the previous update, the heavy machinery arrived to clear the 6/8 tree root balls, to clear the area to the rear of tee 8 and finally to sieve the soil from the debris and roots. Unfortunately, with this heavy plant on saturated ground there is now repairs to undertake to the playing surfaces.
I can assure you that, Chris, all the greenkeeping team and I have worked tirelessly, to try and get the golf course open. The new winter tees have arrived and are currently in storage but will be in use when we open.
Again, in my previous update, there was going to be a request for your help in assisting the greenkeeping team with divoting and infilling holes etc. but this has been deferred as the material required is saturated.
The Academy golf course will remain closed until further notice.
Thank you for your understanding.
Best Regards
Steve
Academy course:
The deconstruction of the Padel courts is going well and work is expected to be completed in the next 7 – 10 days. Only once this deconstruction is complete, will we have a better idea as to the repairs required to the fencing on academy course. The academy course will remain closed until spring of 2024, as all efforts are being made to clear and open the main golf course, and access to the east side of the padel courts is required and this can only be gained from St Clements Inner Road, through an existing opening near the driving nets.
Air Eze:
If you have visited the sports centre main club house over the past weeks, you may have noticed an area being clearing near the flagpole. This is to allow for the installation of a compressed air operated cleaning station, to clean both your golf shoes and trolley wheels. Please visit https://air-eze.co.uk/
Please be patient, I do understand your frustration, but as I have said previously, the course will be open when it is safe to do so.
Thank you for your understanding.
Kind regards
Steve
